What I think about technology and business, especially with respect to the world's 'flattener' open source and the advance of object-oriented paradigms in computing, including in databases

Dual license model - financially healthy without VC

Interesting article in IT Manager's Journal
Good to read that another embeddable open source DBMS company with a business model equal to db4objects is seeing great financial success. According to market research, Sleepycat made $2.8, 3.8, and 6.5 MM in revenue in 2001 through 2003, respectively. So they should be somewhere at $8 to 10 MM in 2005. With only 30 people, little marketing and other cost (inherent to the dual license model), their cost should be below $4 MM, makes a flat $4 MM annual profit, or some 50% of revenue.
A perfect proof of the cost advantages of the open source model.
Good job, Michael!
