Now Microsoft Compact Framework Users Can Leverage a Native ODBMS Engine with the Same LINQ Interface as in .NET
SAN MATEO, Calif., Oct 6, 2008 - db4objects, creator of the leading open source object database, has announced that its db4o object database now supports Microsoft's LINQ on the Compact Framework v3.5. After the introduction of an optimized LINQ provider in May this year, db4o became one of the first object-oriented databases in the industry to support this new set of extensions to Microsoft's .NET Framework. With this recent addition db4o becomes the first embedded object-oriented database to provide optimized LINQ support on the Compact Framework. CF developers are now free to choose an object oriented persistence engine and still use optimized LINQ expressions for data access as in standard .NET. This means that porting from standard .NET to CF will require no changes to the persistence API and will not entail degradation of performance. An ODBMS is a smart choice because it eliminates the burden of translating objects into tables, a process that is time consuming and prone to mismatch problems, thus allowing the developer to stay focused on the problem logic. A native ODBMS enables the persisted objects to be identical to those created in the object-oriented programming language and to purely reflect the logic inherent to the problem. Even though the Compact Framework comes with a LINQ-to-objects implementation, it lacks the ability to allow language-level code expressions to be represented as objects in the form of expression trees (System.Linq.Expressions namespace), a prerequisite for an optimized LINQ provider. Due to this shortcoming the db4o LINQ provider for CF uses the Mono implementation of this namespace which, thanks to Mainsoft, also includes an expression interpreter which allows to perform LINQ optimizations at runtime (i.e. compilation of expression trees). "This is a great example of what can be achieved through collaboration in the open source community," said German Viscuso, community manager at db4objects, "db4o is GPL and thanks to the incorporation of a MIT/X11 licensed Mono namespace implementation of part of an open standard created by Microsoft we're the first database to provide an optimized LINQ provider for the Compact Framework. Simply mind-blowing!" db4object's db4o database offers the ultimate persistence solution to store objects of any complexity natively, with only a single line of code. db4o's embedded Java and .NET engine leverages many optimization techniques such as Transparent Activation to bolster its lead of up to 44 time faster performance. The database automatically activates objects only when needed thereby loading the absolute minimum from disk, which consumes less memory and boosts performance. db4objects is recognized as "Best of Open Source Software" at 2008 InfoWorld's BOSSIE Awards
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., September 9, 2008 - db4objects (www.db4o.com), creator of the leading open source object database for Java and .NET, has been awarded with "Best of Open Source Developer Tools" 2008 by IDG's InfoWorld.
InfoWorld Media Group is a division of IDG, the world's leading technology media, research, and event company. InfoWorld focuses on helping IT solutions management choose the right technology not merely covering the enterprise technology market, but also by identifying and promoting emerging technology segments that add unique value for the organizations that implement them, as well as the vendors that provide those solutions.
Among its many awards programs, InfoWorld Best of Open Source Software Awards (or Bossies, for short) recognize the best free and open source software the world has to offer to businesses, IT professionals, and productive individuals who rely on computers to get work done. The 2008 BOSSIE winners include 60 products in eight categories covering business and productivity applications, development tools, middleware, networking, security, and storage.
"The breadth and quality of open source software continues to amaze us," notes Doug Dineley, Executive Editor of the InfoWorld Test Center. "We've singled out 60 products for Bossies -- developer tools, middleware, firewalls and routers, productivity apps, CRM and ERP, etc. -- and we're only scratching the surface. When you look at all that's available, and how good it is, you start to think that someday all software will be free."
Even though db4o received other awards in past years this is the first recognition that is in the segment of open source solutions. db4o has been specifically chosen as "Best of open source developer tools" in the Bossies, a category where InfoWorld's Test Center picks the top free and open source RIA platform, Ajax framework, business rule management system, version control package, object database, Web service test tool, and HTTP client library.
"db4o began life as a Java database library, but its designers have since created parallel editions for the .NET languages. In 2005, db4o implemented Native Queries, which allow you to express queries as Java (or .NET) methods. Recent additions to the library include Transparent Update and Transparent Activation, which more completely automate object persistence" said the analysts behind the BOSSIE Awards. "The engine itself deduces how many of a persistent object's members must be read from and written to storage, simplifying coding and providing better memory management. Also new in db4o is support for Microsoft LINQ."
"We've come a long way with db4o since the first line of code in the year 2000" said German Viscuso from db4objects, Inc. "The pace of growth of our vibrant community and ecosystem around the technology has been simply amazing. And the fact that we stayed focused on open source practices was vital for this. We have more than 2.5 million downloads so far and 40,000 registered developers in our community, 25,000 posts in the forums, an open Jira issue tracker, public access to our SVN repository, a set of community programs in place and we even publish videos of the development team pairing sessions to share knowledge (paircasts). We're thrilled that db4o has been recognized among the best of open source software for 2008".
db4o keeps evolving into the open source object persistence engine of choice for thousands of developers out there. Major milestones include native queries in v5 (end of 2005) which enable developers to express queries directly with their own programming language (eg. Java or .NET dialects), the db4o replication system (dRS) in early 2006 that allows bi-directional replication between different databases (including relational datastores), a new B-Tree indexing architecture and object marshaller in v5.4 (mid 2006) that boosted performance by orders of magnitude and transparent activation in v6.3 (mid 2007) which enabled the retrieval objects from the db into memory as needed without user intervention. Having the largest community of object database users, db4objects is also committed to its role as a leader in the effort to create a standard for object databases through the activities of the OMG.

db4o Listed in Both Embedded and OODBMS Categories in Annual Review of Worldwide Software Market
SAN MATEO, Calif., August 25, 2008 - db4objects (http://www.db4o.com/), creator of the leading open source object database, was highlighted in IDC's Software Taxonomy report for 2007, the market research firm's view of the worldwide software marketplace. db4objects' db4o open source object database was identified as one of few representative examples of embedded database management systems (DBMS) and object-oriented database management systems.
IDC's Software Taxonomy report breaks the packaged software market into 79 specific market groups with three to six representative software products in each category, within three segments: applications, application development and deployment (AD&D) software, and system infrastructure software. The company uses this continually updated list of representative software products to calculate such metrics as current and projected market segments' revenue and growth
"This report defines the breadth and depth of our global software marketplace, and the inclusion of db4objects marks a well-deserved recognition of the company's role in the object-oriented and embedded database marketplaces," said Miko Matsumura, a well-known technology advisor, speaker and entrepreneur. "With the world's largest developer community of its kind, db4objects is clearly helping to define the DBMS marketplace."
The db4object developer community has drawn more than 40,000 registered Java and .NET developers. db4o offers the ultimate persistence solution to store objects of any complexity natively and efficiently with only a single line of code.
"Until now, mismatching persistence solutions that require conversion or mapping have confounded Java and .NET developers by lengthening development cycles, limiting data models and restricting their ability to adapt those models over time," said Bob Pasker, Java luminary and technology advisor on the db4o board of directors. "db4o allows developers to leverage the full benefit of the Object Oriented paradigm by offering easy creation and querying using native Java or .NET, persisting the exact objects with a single line of code, allowing developers to modify the object model over time as requirements evolve, with no special action or overhead."

"Sharpen" Increases Market Reach While Keeping a Unified Code Base
SAN MATEO, Calif., May 30, 2008 - db4objects (http://www.db4o.com/), creator of the leading open source object database, has announced that its Sharpen Java to C# source code conversion tool is now available to the public as free software. db4objects has used the tool extensively to generate most of the .NET db4o engine core code and unit test suites from Java sources.
"Sharpen is the 'secret sauce' that enables us to provide the db4o object database engine in native version for the two most popular platforms from a single code base," said Anat Gafni, vice president of engineering at db4objects. "Our decision to release this tool to developers to help them bridge the gap between Java and .NET and create truly cross-platform applications is just one more clear indication of our commitment to the Open Source community."
"The emergence of LINQ is very exciting for developers and we are thrilled to leverage the capabilities of these extensions to allow developers to maintain the full power of complex object structures and the development environment that is often lost or compromised when translating to/from SQL," said Anat Gafni, vice president of engineering at db4objects. "We have optimized our support for LINQ so that queries are executed in a high-performance fashion."
Sharpen gives developers the ability to support both Java and .NET while maintaining a single source code without having to invest in an expensive translation tool. Since the tool has been integrated into db4o's development cycle, it a well tested and mature solution that developers can trust.
"The advantages of maintaining a single source code base cannot be underestimated," said Rodrigo B. de Oliveira, technical lead architect at db4o. "In the development cycle, multiple source bases inevitably start to diverge, and lead to duplicate efforts, and differences in features and quality between the platforms. Once a very challenging task, maintaining a unified code base, and in turn a unified community, now is truly possible."
For developers interested in Sharpen capabilities, the current features include:
- Mapping between Java and .NET native type system
- Compliance with C# coding conventions
- User-defined namespace/class/method mappings
- Method to property mappings
- Generics support
- Partial conversions
- Mixing native and converted C# sources
- VS solution file support
- Ant integration
"Sharpen bridges the gap between our Java and .NET communities," said German Viscuso, db4objects' community manager. "We have been able to effectively receive source code contributions from both Java and .NET developers without having to worry about db4o versions being out of sync. It's simply the best of both worlds!"
The tool is being released under the GNU General Public License (GPL). The subversion repository, documentation and issue tracker are available online. In db4o's Sharpen forum, developers can provide feedback and contributions to increase the availability of automatic conversion of not-yet supported Java constructs and idioms.

Now Microsoft Users Can Replace SQL Database with Native ODBMS Engine with the Same LINQ Interface in .NET
SAN MATEO, Calif., May 5, 2008 - db4objects (http://www.db4o.com/about/news/release/www.db4o.com), creator of the leading open source object database, has announced that its db4o object database is now optimized for Microsoft's LINQ, making it among the first object-oriented databases in the industry to support this new set of extensions to Microsoft's .NET Framework. With the new support, developers are free to choose an object oriented optimized engine without having to change the API or compromise performance.
Choosing an ODBMS eliminates the burden of translating objects into tables, a process that is time consuming and prone to mismatch problems, thus allowing the developer to stay focused on the problem logic. A native ODBMS enables the persisted objects to be identical to those created in the object-oriented programming language and to purely reflect the logic inherent to the problem.
The new LINQ extensions encompass language-integrated data query, set, and transform operations. It includes extensions to the C# and Visual Basic languages with native language syntax for queries and provides class libraries to take advantage of these capabilities.
"db4objects pioneered the native query API and syntax to its own database," said Ted Neward, Principal of Neward & Associates, "and now I'm excited to see Microsoft and db4objects working to bring this same functionality to the .NET community. I think this will be a natural partnership and highly beneficial for .NET programmers for years to come."
db4object's db4o database offers the ultimate persistence solution to store objects of any complexity natively, with only a single line of code. db4o's embedded Java and .NET engine leverages many optimization techniques such as Transparent Activation to bolster its lead of up to 44 time faster performance. SAN MATEO, Calif., April 21, 2008 – db4objects (www.db4o.com), creator of the leading open source object database for Java and .NET, has announced that the Polytechnic University in Hannover, Germany has leveraged the db4o open source object database to create LeReSpo, a training application for the non-profit Disability Sports Association in Lower Saxony.
"The Java programming language was familiar to the students working on this solution, which was important," said Prof. Dr. Carsten Kleiner at the university, adding that the possibility of free distribution through an open source product was another important consideration. "We considered a number of options but many open source options simply weren’t mature enough, while commercial applications proved expensive and difficult to evaluate effectively."
By implementing db4o’s object-oriented database, the university leverages the strengths of the embedded technology to create a ‘no-administration’ database that simplifies the solution for the users. In addition, the Java platform and its use of persistent objects eases the integration process and provides the ability to store multimedia objects. Best of all, the open source nature of the db4objects provides a database with a no-cost licensing option.
"We continue to see db4o spark fantastic, innovative applications. There’s nothing more exciting than seeing our solution used in a way that really helps people," said Anat Gafni, vice president of engineering at db4o. "It is amazing and wonderful to be the catalyst for innovative developments that are making a big difference."
The training software teaches sports rehabilitation coaches to work with disabled people or injured athletes in a manner that is appropriate to their physical limitations and tracks and assesses their learning in the program.
"The Disability Sports Association provides an important service to disabled people by creating sports classes that are run by specially-trained coaches and monitored by doctors," said Professor Kleiner. "They wanted an application that helps ensure the instructors receive comprehensive and standardized training."
The program utilizes a "learn by playing" methodology and allows instructors to train groups in a presentation environment or create a self-training option where trainees play games and answer questions individually at their own pace.
Using db4o, the developers easily adapt the questions and games used in the trainings to specific groups or teaching goals since all questions are stored in a single file to allow for quick and easy changes and simple distribution. The embedded database also minimizes the administration for end users.

SAN MATEO, Calif., January 22, 2008 – db4objects (www.db4o.com), creator of the leading open source object database for Java and .NET, has announced availability of a development release of db4o version 7.1. The new version features Transparent Update, which automates the storage of objects in any Java or .NET application into a db4o database.
In version 7.0, db4o introduces Transparent Activation that eliminates the need to specify the activation depth of object graphs by automatically loading only the absolute minimum from disk. The result is less memory consumption and a boost in performance. Transparent Update provides the symmetric equivalent for storing (persisting) objects. With Transparent Update there is no need to define the depth of the object to be updated or to use "set." db4o automatically detects when objects are updated and enlists them for storing upon transaction commit. This feature not only simplifies coding, it also leads to faster execution times. The application only stores exactly what is needed.
"The combination of Transparent Activation and Transparent Update results in what we call Transparent Persistence," said Rodrigo de Oliveira, lead at the db4o Project Steering Committee. "Transparent Persistence makes dealing with persistence a non-issue. It all works efficiently without burdening the developer. It enables them to focus entirely on application development without having to write persistence code or consider object graph details."
"Transparent persistence together with db4o’s answer to the impedance mismatch makes a developer’s life really simple” said Edwin Sanchez, IT Solutions Delivery Manager at A. Magsaysay, Inc. “In the end you get simpler development, more deliveries, and more accomplishments. For developers who are already experts with RDBMS, explicitly specifying an activation depth when using db4o may be alien to them. Now there is no need to do so."
db4objects customers have stated that as much as 50% of an application’s code base can be persistence related. As Transparent Persistence takes care of storing and retrieving objects in the background with no developer intervention, application code is cleaner and simpler and therefore easier to maintain. In short, it results in better and faster code.

db4o Provides Missing Element to Google's Mobile Initiative: a Mobile and Efficient,
Cross-Application Data Storage
SAN MATEO, Calif., December 5, 2007 – db4objects (www.db4o.com), creator of the leading open source object
database for Java and .NET, announces that db4o runs seamlessly on the Android platform,
a software stack for mobile devices introduced recently by the Google-backed Open
Handset Alliance. Although Java programmers are delighted with Android’s full object
oriented platform they are frustrated by its bundling with a relational database,
requiring cumbersome plumbing between objects and tables. db4o fills the gap by
providing a fast and secure, native Java object database that makes storing objects
and sharing of data between applications simple and easy.
Google revolutionized the wireless world by introducing Android through the Open
Handset Alliance on November 5. Instead of introducing a widely anticipated gPhone,
Google created an open software platform with the potential to change the wireless
landscape. Android is shifting the emphasis from hardware to software, making Verizon's
CEO McAdam remark in BusinessWeek on Dec 3 that he saw the industry entering an
“inflection point.”
The Android stack is complete with application framework, development environment,
tools, debuggers and vital applications for developers to leverage and create powerful
applications. Java is the predominant language used in the framework providing a
clear path for object-oriented programming. Java developers can now create rich
and exciting applications that run on any Android based phone.
Therefore it is surprising that Android is delivered with a relational database,
the only element that does not fit into this object oriented picture. Fortunately,
db4objects has the solution. db4o runs seamlessly on Android, enabling native storage
and retrieval of objects of any complexity. Minutes after downloading the Android
SDK db4objects engineers had Android running with db4o. Android with db4o is tested
regularly against 3,500 test cases with no problems. Now db4o's device-grade software
quality, as proven in mission-critical deployments in high speed trains, aircrafts,
and photocopiers, can be placed into the hands of every Android developer.
The gain in efficiency that db4o provides is demonstrated by db4objects' community
manager German Viscuso who adapted
PasswordSafe, one of the first generally available software packages for
Android, to run with db4o. “This is really awesome,” said Steven Osborn, the creator
of PasswordSafe, who originally started off with relational SQLite. “The db4o code
is much more elegant.” Another sample application to show the great fit of db4o
for Android is MapMe that displays 2D maps on Google Android and leverages
db4o for storing and querying global navpoints in Google Maps.
There are many benefits to using an object database like db4o, including easier
code maintenance, and the ability to create a variety of new, innovative applications
based on more complex data models. Unlike in rigid, predefined SQL tables, db4o
allows the storage of dynamic, free-form data, which can be changed or amended any
time. In addition, db4o allows for efficient data replication with its db4o Replication
System (dRS), another missing element in Android's software stack. As a result,
developers can write software applications that enable the backup of user data to
a back-end server or their home PC. A consumer use case could be to start a game
on the phone, freeze it, and continue playing at home in the evening. Business use
cases include field force automation, data acquisition such as with RFID, and complex
navigation systems that use locally cached geodata.
For more information please read db4object's Chief Software Architect Carl Rosenberger's
blog about "Why Android will start the mobile Tornado" or visit the

performance lead over incumbents such as Hibernate, relational or non-native object
databases. The current release supports native Transparent Activation for Java and
db4o collections, a .NET version is planned for December and full support for all
collection types in Q1/08.
"This major enhancement of the db4o database makes it easier than ever for developers
to work with complex object graphs," said Rodrigo de Olivera, lead at the db4o Project
Steering Committee. "Just like people don't like to bother with a manual shift and
choose automatic transmission for their cars, Transparent Activation offers a seamless
way to work with db4o without having to know what's going on under the hood. You
can focus on your application's functionality while db4o makes sure your object
model is always ready for action."
In version 7.0, db4o automatically detects the activation depth of object graphs
thereby only loading the absolute minimum from disk, which consumes less memory
and boosts performance. Unlike implementations with highly abstracted data architectures
such as Hibernate, other object-relational solutions or non-native object databases,
db4o's embedded Java and .NET engine can leverage Transparent Activation natively
to bolster its lead of up to 44x faster performance. Since developers no longer
need to manually define the activation depth of the objects they are manipulating,
storing or retrieving, they can significantly slash development time.
"Our application makes use of some large and complex object graphs," said Joseph
Duda of Nexidia, a leading vendor of speech recognition software based in Atlanta,
GA. "For Nexidia, Transparent Activation will reduce the active memory footprint
of the application as well as reduce launch times and other graph-loading costs
at runtime."
The implementation of Transparent Activation as well as a host of minor enhancements
to version 7.0 is driven by db4o's community of nearly 30,000 Java and .NET developers,
the world's largest of its kind. Thanks to the collaborative, open source development
model, db4objects put object databases back onto the map and makes db4o a mandatory
candidate for every innovative Java or .NET system architect, especially when it
comes to embedded or mobile software applications.
Registered users of db4o can download the software from the db4o developer site. A beta .NET version of the software
is planned for December and a production ready release is expected in the first
quarter of 2008 upon approval from the developer community.

Leading Open Source Object Database Company Launches dDN Enterprise
SAN MATEO, Calif., November 13, 2007 – db4objects (www.db4o.com), creator of the leading open source object
database for Java and .NET, has launched its new premium service offering dDN Enterprise
which includes the unique new support service XtremeConnect as well as the new professional-grade
developer productivity tool ObjectManager Enterprise. The new offer is designed
to meet the growing demand of companies with cutting edge Java and .NET projects
that want to leverage db4o's popular open source database to provide competitive
new features and services while mitigating the technology risks through investment
in expert support.
The centerpiece of db4objects' new offer is XtremeConnect which allows developers
to directly connect with a db4o specialist for a remote pairing session that enables
joint design reviews, problem solving or debugging. db4objects has pioneered the
convergence of Extreme Programming and Open Source development processes by creating
a unique virtual pair programming technique that works with geographically disparate
teams. XtremeConnect makes this process innovation available to customers and their
specific projects, providing for a very efficient, lean and highly specialized support
offer unlike any other.
The new premium service offering db4o Developer Network (dDN) Enterprise is priced
at $18,000 per named developer per year and consists of a bundle of four components:
-
XtremeConnect – includes 40 hourly credits for remote pairing sessions
- ObjectManager
Enterprise – an exclusive new developer productivity tool for database browsing
and analysis, which comes as a plug-in for Visual Studio and Eclipse or standalone
-
A redistribution license for db4o runtimes – 500 copies of db4o's in-process license
edition
- Exclusive access to db4o's stable releases
"We have hundreds of thousands of users today, many of them developing software
for highly innovative products – they have a need for solid technical support. This
new offering is designed to respond to that demand," said Christof Wittig, chief
executive officer of db4objects. "RedHat and MySQL have pioneered commercial open
source business models where commercial tools and services boost their customers'
productivity and shorten their time to market. db4objects takes it to the next level
by leveraging the db4o project's own remote pair programming methodology into the
unique XtremeConnect support service."
Object-oriented programming and databases are not only benefiting device manufacturers
and software companies with efficiencies in the development process but also helping
unlock features and capabilities that in the past were unthinkable. For instance,
db4o's Java object storage is elevating free-form user generated data on handsets
to a key component of mobile carrier's customer retention strategy. Meanwhile, navigation
system providers are looking into over-the-air updateable geodata systems, and find
db4o's object-navigational architecture a perfect fit. These innovations at the
technology frontier require close cooperation between the domain and persistence
technology experts, as provided by dDN Enterprise.
"I would definitely endorse db4o's use in commercial Windows software due to its
performance, both in terms of memory overhead and transactional latency; its scalability
in terms of how many items you can put in the database; and its solid reliability.
But the overall endorsement comes down to db4o's support, because if you hit a snag,
the db4o team works with you to overcome it. That's solid customer support," said
Bret Savage, chief architect of the Seagate Mirra solution.
ObjectManager Enterprise represents the first product of db4objects which is exclusively
distributed under a commercial license. The company will continue to provide the
core db4o object database engine in its entirety under dual licenses--free under
the GPL or under a commercial license. The previous ObjectManager 6.0 is still available
under GPL and is maintained by the db4o community, together with a host of IDE plug-in
projects.

Now Device Manufacturers, Operators and
Application Developers Can Enhance their Services with Persistence for
Objects of Any Complexity, With Only One Line of Code
SAN MATEO, Calif., and COLOGNE, Germany, June. 19, 2007 – db4objects (www.db4o.com),
creator of the leading open source object database, and ProSyst (www.prosyst.com),
the leading provider of client and server side OSGi service platforms
today announced a strategic partnership that enables the provision of
OSGi platforms with integrated persistence. Under the partner agreement
db4objects has adapted their native Java object database to OSGi
specifications and has released “db4o for OSGi Solutions”, an OSGi
specific distribution. ProSyst has adopted db4o as
the standard Object Persistence Package of ProSyst's commercial product
mBedded Server Professional Edition and has signed a reseller agreement
with db4objects to provide a single point of contact for customers
seeking the market's leading and most comprehensive OSGi framework with
integrated persistence. In addition ProSyst has embedded db4o as an
optional package into its open source distribution mBedded Server
Equinox Edition.
"As the market leader in OSGi
frameworks, it was an easy decision to partner with the leading pure
Java persistence solution of db4objects," said Thomas Hott, CEO of
ProSyst. "We needed a robust and proven solution. We not only looked at
db4objects' development methodology and elaborate testing framework but
also at the fact that customers such as Boeing, Ricoh, Seagate and
leading investment banks are trusting their technology. Robustness and
demonstrated reliability are key criteria for the OSGi framework."
"This is a match made in heaven" said
Christof Wittig CEO of db4objects. "db4o is native to Java which means
that developers can be much more productive working in their favorite
environment without having to waste time writing persistence-related
code accessing non-Java databases. ProSyst mBedded Server adds mature,
robust and tested technology to Java that device manufacturers, service
providers or enterprise software companies were looking for. What moved
us to select ProSyst to launch db4o for OSGi Solutions was an
increasing number of requests for a persistence solution targeting
applications as varied as mobile devices, smart home applications,
telematics, enterprise, and industrial applications."
db4o for OSGi Solutions
db4o for OSGi solutions provides a service interface that enables all
modules using the OSGi platform to access the facilities of object
persistence services, such as powerful native queries (native to Java),
transaction isolation and recovery, and storage of very complex
objects. At the same time it ensures high programming efficiency by
avoiding the object-relational impedance mismatch problem.
ProSyst mBedded Server
ProSyst mBedded Server is a high performance, low footprint OSGi R4
implementation that is offered in two main distributions:
- The Open Source mBedded Server Equinox Edition is based on the Eclipse Equinox OSGi. It is the ideal choice for research and open source projects.
- The optimized commercial mBedded Server Professional Edition
is based on the ProSyst OSGi framework implementation - it contains
everything that is needed to embed this platform into mass market
devices. mBedded Server Professional Edition sets new standards for
performance and memory efficiency through several unique technology
innovations and is optimized for small platforms with limited resources.
OSGi Alliance
The OSGi Alliance
was established in 1999 to specify an industry standard Java-based
application platform that allows applications to be built from small,
reusable components. It is designed to be lightweight and dynamic so
that modules can be installed, started, stopped, uninstalled and
updated - all at run-time. The framework provides a service registry, a
key component for SOAs (service-oriented architectures) which is one
reason why OSGi technology is gaining so much following from leading
software companies such as IBM, BEA, Oracle and RedHat, and is the
foundation for the leading open development platform Eclipse.

SAN MATEO, Calif., May 22, 2007 - db4objects
(www.db4o.com), the creator of the leading open source object database
for Java and .NET, today announced that ODBMS.ORG,
the Internet's most complete source on object database technology, has
released an article by Ted Neward discussing solutions to the problems
of Object/Relational-Mapping titled: "Avoiding the Quagmire".
Ted caused quite a stir last year when he released a paper titled "The Vietnam of Computer Science", where he compares the object / relational impedance mismatch with the quagmire in Vietnam.
His new paper, "Avoiding the Quagmire", is a follow on paper which
looks at ways to solve the problems highlighted in the initial Vietnam
paper and discusses the consequences of using an object oriented
database management system (ODBMS) as opposed to a relational database
and/or object / relational mappers.
Neward uses db4o as an example where he
discusses how to addresses many of the challenges. Although ODBMS are
not the solution to all problems, he argues that they provide the
developer a better chance of avoiding the quagmire and allowing them to
focus more clearly on the problem at hand.

SAN MATEO, Calif., May 8, 2007 - db4objects
(www.db4o.com), the creator of the leading open source object database
for the Java platform, helped solve a leading Japanese car
manufacturer's hard drive problem by eliminating it.
db4objects will demonstrate at SUN's Java
Playground at booth #1336 a navigation system that is powered by db4o
and a NAND drive. The demo shows how db4o maximizes database
performance and optimizes NAND life. The db4o/NAND navigation system
runs up to 10x faster than a navigation system with a traditional hard
drive.
"With db4o there is no paging and the
database uses very small slots where possible so it runs extremely fast
on NAND,” commented Carl Rosenberger, Chief Software Architect at
db4objects. “That translates into a much finer granularity of how data
is written to the drive which is not only much more efficient but also
ideally suited for NAND drives."
See the interactive demo at SUN’s Java
Playground at the JavaOne Pavilion, Booth #1336, and learn more about
the leading open source object database for Java.
