http://evilmattikinz.livejournal.com/89886.htmlThe db4o conference was a strange affair, more
user group than conference and oscillated between professional and
amateur at times, although impressions were heavily influenced by the
stifling weather in a 1970s (no aircon) university building. On the
plus side though we were reassured to meet the developers who seemed at
least mostly human and competent and chatting about our chosen
architectures and how sensible it actually proved to be. We got a
chance to influence future development by requesting all the features
we could think of, although we probably had an unfair advantage as
there were 4 of us and only one representative from every other
organisation. But then again, we didn't have to fly in from south
america, although it seemed for some that travelling 5 miles across
london was fairly traumatic. The upshot seems to be that db4o is a
pretty dynamic company and still enthusiastic and responsive. I have
some minor issues with their ultra open source approach which I got the
opportunity to talk to them about but on the whole if they can keep the
attitude they have (still hip and cool and excited) and maintain a
revenue stream then they will be a company I'd like to do business with
again.
